Introducing Space OS

Today is one of the most exciting moments in Deta’s journey, to date. We are unveiling the Alpha of Space OS — a new operating system for the internet.

Space OS is designed to make computing on the internet more personal, powerful, and fun. To contextualize why this is so exciting, let’s jump back to Deta’s origins.

A Short History of Deta

Deta was started out of the belief that the relationship between an individual and software was not nearly what it could be. Regardless if we are creating or using, software on the internet is rarely personal. Or approachable. Or fun. Or capable of turning what we dream, into what we can do. Instead, we are stuck fighting complexity and being forced to use whatever we can find off the shelf, with little access to what’s ours.

Deta’s first crack at this problem was Deta Cloud, a cloud platform that tried to make it extremely approachable for developers to build applications on the internet.

Next came Deta Space, which lets users install apps, that developers build, in their own personal cloud computer where they control their apps and data.

These two components were stepping stones to our big dream — the initial version of which we are happy to launch today. We’re very excited to share it with you.

Space OS: A New Operating System for the Internet

Space OS is a new operating system for the web, built on Deta Space. It contains the Horizon and Teletype user interfaces, which support creating, discovering and using personal content and applications. Space OS is designed with AI and interoperability as cornerstones.

Horizon

Horizon is a completely new and personal web interface that’s a core part of Space OS. Here’s an example of a few Horizons:

You can personalize your Horizon with visuals, notes, links, and videos. You can add personal apps from Deta Discovery to your Horizon, while you can also create lightweight apps called Cards straight on your Horizon. Cards can be coded by hand, or described to the AI assistant, Teletype, for instant creation (great for users who can’t code). In future iterations of Horizon, you will be able to customize your Horizon’s look and feel. Since Horizon runs on your personal computer on the internet, you’ll also be able to natively share and collaborate with almost anyone in the world through your Horizons. We think you’ll love it.

Artificial Intelligence

Recent advances in artificial intelligence have captured the imaginations of many, including us at here Deta. While there is a lot of hype, we think these developments will ultimately change how we interact with computers and redefine both what we can do, and who can do it. We are building Space OS to include AI as a cornerstone.

As a first feature, we are letting people create web applications (called Cards) using natural language, usable straight from Horizon — no knowledge of coding needed. Here’s a short demo of this in action:

In the future, Space OS will incorporate many more abilities, powered by AI.

Coming Soon: Immersive Interoperability & SpaceKit 2

One of the core problems with software on the internet is interoperability — almost nothing works together by default, and the solutions all feel like duct tape. With Space OS, we are building everything with native interoperability in mind. You can already access and export all of the data for apps you install from Deta Discovery - with a UI or programmatically. We are looking forward to sharing our new interfaces for more immersive interoperability with you in the coming months.

What we are doing is neither easy nor cheap. We feel very fortunate to announce we raised $3.6 Million in Seed funding to further build Space OS.
